TRAVEL INFORMATION

Popular nicknames for Philadelphia include Philly and The City of Brotherly Love. A commercial, educational, and cultural center, the city was once the second-largest in the British Empire (after London), and the social and philadelphia_skylinegeographical center of the original 13 American colonies. Ben Franklin took a large role in Philadelphia’s early rise to prominence. It was in this city that many of the ideas, and subsequent actions, gave birth to the American Revolution and American Independence, making Philadelphia a centerpiece of early American history. It was the most populous city of the young United States, and served as the nation’s first capital during much of the Revolutionary War and after. Following the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, it was the temporary national capital from 1790 to 1800 while Washington, D.C. was under construction.

Historic by Day, Electric by Night

It’s just one square mile, but the area between Front to 7th Streets and Spruce to Race Streets covers three different neighborhoods, all jam packed with restaurants, galleries, shops and attractions. Each puts its own distinctive spin on history. And together, they make up Historic Philadelphia.

Here America’s most sacred historic sites (the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall) stand side-by-side with the hustle and bustle of a 21st-century city.

Old City brims with shops, cafes, restaurants and bars while Society Hill welcome visitors to stroll their cobblestone streets and take in the architecture of the centuries-old homes, churches and landmarks that make the neighborhood so picturesque.

Tours - Historic Philadelphia
More tour options than ever

Philadelphia is brimming with ways to tour the town — after all, one of the best ways to see Philadelphia is with someone who already knows it. So take a tour and know that no matter what your interest, we’ve got you covered.

New options for touring town by land and by sea: it started with Ride the Ducks and their hugely successful amphibious tour of Philadelphia’s Historic District, which includes a big splash into the Delaware River. Then, the RiverLink Freedom Ferry got into the act with their narrated downriver tours.

Meanwhile, back on land, business is heating up as long-standing companies introduce new tours and vehicles of their own. With the double-decker Big Bus Tours offering an almost-bird’s-eye view of historic and cultural attractions, Philadelphia Trolley Works, best known for their Victorian Trolley tours, have introduced bright red, white and blue double-decker buses to their fleet.

History tours are booming too, especially after the sun goes down. Joining the popular Lights of Liberty Show in the evening tour business is Once Upon A Nation, promoting new adventure tours that engross visitors in history with interactive activities, face-to-face meetings with the Founding Fathers, food, beverages, and for the first time, a twilight visit to Independence Hall.
